Phantom and a Rose

This “sad” town theme contrasts very effectively with The Color of the Summer Sky. In fact, even though we have a nice tune, there’s still a sense that something isn’t “right”, and we need to get back to happier days. The woodwind melody is backed by an electric piano that’s so warm and balanced that it sounds like analog tape. True to similar pieces on the soundtrack, strings join in for the recap, although the primitive Super Nintendo timbre really sounds the part here.

The remake has a simple piano backing with a loud reed instrument playing the melody. Instead of strings coming in, a sort of grating, contemporary digitized pop sound happens that doesn’t fit the purpose of the track well. It’s sad because this is one theme that begs to be taken at face value.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with all your points here, plus the remake version losing sight of what the sound and atmosphere of the sound was meant to tell.
