Secret of Mana’s Insect Monsters

February 20, 2022

These are allegedly Secret of Mana’s insects, but there’s also a non-insect arthropod and a crustacean. And those aren’t half as baffling as the placement of the Chess Knight.

Tree Poison (melee) None Candy 22GP
Square’s Description Murderous bees with a body around 50-80cm. Generally speaking, if a bee stings you, it dies, but even after firing their stinger off like a missile, these ones keep buzzing along just fine.
ManaRedux says… The Buzz Bee’s HP is among the highest of monsters encountered early in the game. They can also poison you. Make sure your armor is up to date, and try not to engage groups of them too closely.

Tree Speed Up Lv.2 None Medical Herb Cup of Wishes
Square’s Description They were once intelligent and sacred creatures. However, that changed when they were decapitated by a person looking for their horn. Be wary of their relentless attacks after they cast Speed Up.
ManaRedux says… The Chess Knight poses a severe stun lock risk, especially in close quarters. They’re sometimes invulnerable to melee attacks, and have high defense otherwise. They can only attack in one direction though, so surround them and don’t give them a chance to make any big moves.

Square’s Description Huge crabs with body lengths of nearly 1m. Even though they’re crabs, these ones live in the forest rather than the seaside. They throws their claws like a boomerang, and spit bubbles filled with smelly breath, but if you observe their movements, you should be able to avoid them.
ManaRedux says… The Steamed Crab is like the other monsters in the Upper Land—tough at first, but not so bad after you get new armor from Neko.

Square’s Description Unpleasant hornworms that are about the same size as a human. There are red warts on the head, body, and tail, and if you touch them, you will be poisoned. They move quickly when attacking, and they may put you to sleep using hypnotic petals.
ManaRedux says… Just attack with weapons and stay far enough away to avoid their poison.

Square’s Description Scorpions that lives in the desert. However, they are over 2m long and have a deadly poison that could kill an elephant. In addition, the attack delivered from their high-lifted tail has destructive power that cannot be underestimated. They also cast Defender.
ManaRedux says… Despite Square’s ominous description, the Sand Stinger is one of the easiest monsters to defeat in Secret of Mana. Slash away at will.
Spider Legs Spider Legs LV HP MP EXP GP

Sylphid Chocolate Candy
Square’s Description Obscured in pits like those of antlions, made in the midst of the desert, these giant spiders wait for prey to enter. Most of their bodies are hidden in the sand, so only their legs have ever been seen.
ManaRedux says… Spider Legs might make you hate Secret of Mana for a bit. They emerge from the quicksand too fast for you to avoid their powerful Earth Slide. You’ll likely find them too tedious to finish off, especially when there’s a lot of them. Sylphid works well if you want to spend the MP.
Bomb Bee Bomb Bee LV HP MP EXP GP

Square’s Description The queen bees of the Buzz Bee murder bees. They aren’t any larger but they show their superiority with their higher level attack and defensive powers. In particular, their attack using poisonous stingers that shoot out of their rear are super powerful.
ManaRedux says… Bomb Bees are no problem, even with their high HP. Just use your weapons. They’re also great for earning up Shade before the Lost Continent sequence.

It’s worth noting that they have much MP, but no spells to go with it.
